5 Major goals of Psychology, including the ultimate one!

5 Major goals of Psychology, including the ultimate one!

The whole of psychology can be said to be based on the following five goals:

  1. Describe

  2. Explain

  3. Predict

  4. Control &

  5. Improve

One can call them 5 major goals of psychology, pillars of human psychology, goals of psychological enquiry/inquiry... anything, the fact remains the same.

So what is Psychology?

It’s a science that studies and deals with the mental processes and behavior of an organism.

Let’s talk about the 5 major goals of Psychology:

1) Describe

In the first goal of psychology, Psychology People always attempt to describe the “focused” behavior as accurately as possible.

Describing is the very first thing done by a Psychologist, here one tries to get the most out of the available information/data, one tries to describe the particular/focused behavior in order to understand it.

This process of describing helps one to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy behavior.

Helps one to understand and with that one goes towards 2nd goal of Psychology that is Explaining.

2) Explain

In the first goal, one tried to describe and understand the focused behavior now one going to explain it.

Here in this step one to learn how accurately did s/he followed the first rule of Psychology, how accurately one described the focused behavior and understood at the same time.

In this goal of psychology, one is subjected to find out the reasons, causing factors, determinants... behind the focused behavior.

Also one needs to explain under what conditions the focused behavior happens and does not happen.

When one is gets succeded in the explaining step, one moves towards the 3rd goal of psychology which is prediction.

3) Prediction

When one is accurately able to describe and explain the focused behavior only then one is capable of making an accurate prediction.

In this step one predicts, it’s like forecasting about the focused behavior, like under what conditions the behavior could be seen, what could be its intensity, how often it would happen/repeat itself… on the basis of the first two steps.

Accurate prediction happens only when one accurately describes and explains the focused behavior.

It’s like studying a thing very thoroughly and making an EDUCATED GUESS.

This was all about studying, analyzing, predicting... now the action begins!

Moving towards the 4th step that is controlling.

4) Control

Why did we describe, explain & predict the focused behavior, so as to make some changes in the focused behavior and either change it completely or make it healthy through some changes!

Controlling is many a time perceived wrong, naive people think that the psychology person is going to control us, you know what, that’s not the case!

A psychology person helps you to control the focused behavior which was earlier controlling you!

It’s like the Psychologist is facilitating you to take charge as well as complete control of the focused behavior and yourself.

Controlling here refers to:

Making a particular behavior happen:

The behavior you want, the behavior which is healthy happens after you go through the process assisted by the psychology person.

Reducing it:

Initially, the Psychologist focuses on reducing the unhealthy focused behavior followed by scarcely ever even its extinction.

Enhancing it:

Enhancing the other healthy behaviors so as to be a better version of ourselves.

With that comes towards 5 the fifth goal of psychology which is: improve.

5) Improve

Again a question, why did we describe, explain, predict, and control the focused behavior?

So as to improve right!

Psychology is always focused on improving the quality of human life.

Improvement is the ultimate goal of psychology!

These are not only the goals of psychology but these are steps that every psychology person goes through so it’s very important for us to learn about them and follow them so as to get desired results.

How does psychology explain astrology?

It doesn’t; both are entirely different things. One is backed by science, relies on studies, and objectively evaluates actions, behaviors, personalities, etc., that’s Psychology. On the other hand, Astrology suggests that the position and movements of celestial bodies, such as stars, the moon, and other planets, impact human beings. At the same time, some psychologists and research scholars look into why people are drawn to astrology. Many see it as a way to find meaning or reflect on themselves, even though it isn’t backed by science. It appeals to the human need for predictability and understanding, which social psychologists might explore from a cultural or cognitive perspective. My thoughts as a Psychologist: Astrology does provide some sense of predictability and security because it gives the impression that you know what’s coming in the future. By that, we think we can be prepared or feel less surprised when it happens. But honestly, tell me—when we know exams are coming, how pre...

When do we have a Panic Attack

That’s when our anxiety levels exceed our capacity to cope, overwhelming us and manifesting as physical symptoms like a racing heart, breathlessness, or even a full-blown panic attack. The way to deal with it is by acknowledging the anxiety, recognizing that something is bothering you, and understanding that your body is trying to communicate through these symptoms. Instead of fearing these sensations, try to pause, breathe, and listen to what your body is signaling. With awareness and grounding yourself in the present, you can regain a sense of control. And later, you can always explore what led you to this point and work with a professional to ensure you can manage it if it ever happens again 🤗 Your Psychologist, Ambidextrous Anmol
